Raleigh, NC: Family-Owned Wineries
North Carolina may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of world-class wineries with heritage-grown vineyards. But thanks to a few enterprising families, the Triangle area is quickly becoming a destination for sipping the fruits of life. Even if you’re not a wine-lover, there is still plenty to love. Just 20 minutes outside of Raleigh city center in Apex, NC, is Cloer Vineyards.* Offering tours, tastings, and educational experiences, this family-owned and operated vineyard offers a scenic oasis away from urban life, not to mention the chance to pet baby goats! The town of Apex is also pretty cute, offering up homey restaurants, quirky boutiques, and a feeling that time forgot. If you have time, the railroad museum about 10 minutes away is always worth a visit.
Atlanta, GA: Lake Lanier
In the dead heat of an Atlanta summer, a glass of water is a must. Lake Lanier is a man-made reservoir that was designed to provide drinking water to the city and prevent flooding of the nearby river. However, the urban planners went a step beyond utility and created a beautiful place for outdoor lovers and thrill-seekers. With an array of recreational activities including swimming, kayaking, and zip lining, this is an hour’s drive that really pays off. The water comes from the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains, ensuring clean swimming all day long and 700 miles of shoreline means you’ll never feel cramped. The nearby towns aren’t too shabby either, with a variety of restaurants and historical flair.
Los Angeles, CA: Ojai
Ever look at an Anthropologie catalog and think, “I don’t just want that top, I want that life.” Just an hour outside of LA is the not-so-hidden gem of Ojai, which is a Coachella-esque fever dream just an hour and 20 minutes from LA. If you’ve ever wanted to chill with the cool kids, this is the spot for you. Nestled by hills and mountains, the town has a low-maintenance, effortlessly relaxed feel and an array of ‘grammable shops, bars, and restaurants that will make your friends and family jealous -- #nofilter required. Take the extra time to tour an olive farm or head up to Meditation Mount to recharge and rejuvenate in style.
Dallas-Fort Worth, TX: Athens
Small town charm and a chance to explore the outdoors await those willing to drive just an hour from DFW. The area’s biggest attraction is the Freshwater Fishery where the Texas State Department of Parks and Wildlife raises most of the native fish and reptiles that populate the lakes and rivers. Take a tour with your kids and see everything from alligators to catfish. You can even take a selfie with some of the world’s biggest live largemouth bass! For real adventurers, the nearby Scuba Park provides the opportunity to dive with ruins that rival the original Athens Greece. Check out sunken planes, boats, and embark on an underwater treasure hunt. If all that fun makes you work up an appetite, be sure to hit up the Athens Brewing Company on your way home for world-class pints and sliders.
