At Spiffy, we understand that our customers’ cars are more than just a vehicle, they are your pride and joy. Many of us are willing to put as much effort into having our cars look good as we do in making ourselves look good. The only way to achieve a flawlessly clean car without damaging it is to wash and detail it by hand, with the right techniques and the right products. Failure to do so can even result in permanent damage, so be careful.

Here are Spiffy’s top dos and don’ts for washing your car.

DON’T Use Household Cleaning Products

While dish detergent may make your dishes sparkle, it can damage your car’s paint. Same goes for other cleaning products you have lying around the house such as laundry detergent, hand soaps, and all-purpose cleaners. These products are formulated to serve a certain purpose and can cause permanent scratches, unsightly buildup, and strip your car’s protective finish.

DO Use Eco-Friendly Products

Dedicated car wash products tend to be far gentler and will be specially formulated to clean your car. However, make sure that the products you choose are green-certified and eco-friendly. This will be healthier for the environment, and for your family as you’ll avoid toxic runoff that can get into groundwater and onto your skin. All of Spiffy’s products go through intensive testing to ensure that they are safe for your car and the planet.

DON’T Risk Exterior Scratches

If you happen to drop your sponge or rag on the ground, consider it finished. Picking it up and using it again can allow small particles of dirt or grime to come into contact with your paint, causing scratches and swirls. Throw that one into a strong machine wash and use a fresh one to finish. Same thing goes for using water buckets to rinse. Make sure you use one bucket to rinse your rag or mitt and another to actually wash the car. That will also prevent scratches from dirt particles.

DON’T Go It Alone

Many people enjoy washing their cars by hand, as it is the best way to get a thorough cleaning and can even be an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. However, washing it by hand can be a huge waste of water and if you want to detail your car, it may be a serious investment if you want all of the correct tools and chemicals to make it shine..
