Today is one of the most important days of the year in Spiffyland… World Penguin Day! Penguins are not only our iconic mascot and logo, but they have shaped our company. These adorable and fun creatures go hand-in-hand with our corporate culture and office environment.

Magellanic Penguin on the beach

Here at Spiffy, we symbolically adopted a female Magellanic Penguin who we (fittingly) named Spiffy. She lives in Cabo Virgenes, an island on the border of Argentina and Chile. We’ve been following Spiffy for about a year in which she has had chicks, migrated for the winter, and most recently she has hatched more chicks.

Recently Spiffy has been caring for her chicks, by taking turns with her partner to go to sea and catch food. The chicks are now old enough to pack their bags, send their love, and go out on their own. These chicks have never caught fish or survived without their parents before, so they are relying on instinct and each other. Below is a photo of chicks in the colony, notice how some have lost their baby feathers and some still have them. They will eventually all look like the striped penguin on the far right.

Since Chile Virgenes is south of the equator, their winter is typically June to August. The days are starting to get shorter so it’s imperative that these chicks learn how to efficiently catch fish. Within the ocean there are patches of kelp beds which are almost guaranteed to have copious amounts of easy-to-catch fish and small crustaceans.

The next few weeks will involve the chicks learning how to fend for themselves and Spiffy the penguin enjoying some much needed R&R before the winter months.

How can you help our penguins?

Here at Spiffy, we love sharing these updates because not only are they fun & exciting, they are also educational. The Magellanic Penguin is listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN. While these updates are lighthearted, it’s important to understand the seriousness of the decreasing numbers of this species. If you want to donate, or simply be more informed about endangered penguins, follow this link. Let's keep all penguins healthy & thriving!
